John Box (Billingshurst)
I’ve lived in Billingshurst for the most of my life having moved from Worthing as a young child. I attended Billingshurst Primary School, the Junior School and then The Weald. After graduating from Keele University with a degree in politics, I moved backed to the area and now live with my family.

I was recently elected Youth Officer of the Horsham Labour Party because I’m particularly concerned with issues facing younger people in the area. A particular issue of concern is the lack of affordable housing in the area as I’ve seen a growing number of my generation unable to take their first steps on the housing ladder.

I would aim to bring a fresh voice to the District Council. The Lib Dems have shown themselves to be ineffective in their commitment to affordable housing. I promise that if elected I will stand firm and campaign for this vital issue for this area. Also, I will speak up for Youth Services such as youth centres and events that are vital for the community but will no doubt be under threat from cuts.

Keith Maslin (Billingshurst)
Keith is a graduate of the University of Keele and has a PhD Philosophy. He has worked in universities both here and in the Philippines, and from 1992 to 2009 was Head of Philosophy at Esher College in Surrey.

He is married to Zielfa and they have a daughter, Philippa. In his retirement Dr Maslin enjoys studying and writing Philosophy, as well as listening to music and playing the piano. He is also a keen cook. He comes from a staunchly Labour background and has been a Labour supporter all his life.

Ray Chapman (Broadbridge Heath)
My wife Sheila and I have lived in Horsham for 29 years and brought up our four children here. Before retiring recently I worked as a production planner in Crawley for a global company manufacturing Radio Therapy equipment for the treatment of cancer. I have been the chairman of a local Youth Club for 17years.

I am an active member of Horsham Labour party and have campaigned on a range of local issues including against the closure of the subsidised child holiday scheme for working parents. I recently spoke in the Council chamber against the planning application for the proposed expansion of Broadbridge Heath. I was disappointed with the Liberal Democrats' lack of opposition; their response on both issues was too little, too late.

If elected I would particularly campaign to protect the green spaces and the environment in and around Broadbridge Heath and for more affordable homes for local people. We must tackle affordability and promote inclusive mixed communities where young and old can afford to live. We must take a stronger position with developers when necessary

Adrian Norridge (Bramber, Upper Beeding and Woodmancote)

Susan Chord (Chanctonbury)

Margaret Cornwell (Chantry)
Margaret spent her whole life working within the NHS and passionately believes in continuing and deepening the improvements made under Labour within the NHS. She remembers first hand the delapidated run down facilities, the ever legthening waiting lists and the demoralised staff during the bad old days, when the Tories last ran our health service. She has no truck with local Tory politicians who wish to run down our health service now.

Recently retired Margaret, if elected will seek to represent the views of all the electorate and will work tirelessly to ensure that the people of Chantry ward receive the very best services on offer from the district council.

Jane Field (Denne)

Josephine Battersby (Forest)
Jo Battersby is a long term active member of the Labour party, and is married with a grown up family. A retired school teacher, she holds a Master's Degree in Education and has worked in local schools - in charge of special educational needs.

By standing as a Labour party candidate, she challenges the inefficiency and procrastination of the existing coalition council which is totally unwilling to recognise the current housing and community needs of Horsham people.

Mark Boorsma (Henfield)
I am married with a son, two stepdaughters, four (step)grandchildren and a dog, and have lived in Henfield for 10 years. I am the Sales Manager for a training company based in Burgess Hill. I have also worked in the Civil Service and a further education College.

After the relative bustle of Crawley, I love village life. Everything I need is within touching distance and it is a tranquil haven from work and day-to-day trials and tribulations.

I care about the fabric of our society and the fragility of the support for those who are vulnerable. I worry that deep cuts in public expenditure based on ideology rather than manifesto will seriously afflict those who are unable to fend for themselves.

Unfortunately, in the present economic climate it is difficult to divorce national from local issues as the Tory-led Government's, policies will affect village life.

If elected I will support only new housing developments that address the massive shortfall in affordable housing for local people.

Linda Hugl (Holbrook East)
Linda comes from Liverpool although she has lived in Horsham for over 30 years and is married with two children at Collyers. Formerly a scientist but now a business administrator, she and her husband run a chemistry company in Horsham.

Linda first joined the Labour Party in response to Margaret Thatcher's defeat of Neil Kinnock in 1992 but she left in 2003 in protest over the invasion of Iraq. Nuclear disarmament has been her key political passion since the 1980s and for the last 9 years she has been the national treasurer of CND, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. She actively campaigns for Trident to be scrapped.

Linda rejoined the Labour Party just before the last general election and voted for Diane Abbott 1 and Ed Milliband 2 in the leadership election. She firmly believes that AV should be introduced for general elections so as to encourage more people to participate in the democratic process and to lead to a slightly fairer voting system.

At the local level, she reckons electoral unfairness is demonstrated by the scandalous fact that the Labour party is not represented on the local council despite its significant support within the town.

Sheila Chapman (Holbrook West)
Sheila has lived in Horsham for 29 years. She has taught science and has specialised in Special Educational Needs in the state system.

Since retiring Sheila has embarked on teaching art and design to mentally disabled adults.

Sheila would campaign on Care in the Community together with affordable housing therefore enabling equality for all members of society.

Jonathan Austin (Horsham Park)
I’ve lived with my family in Horsham for nearly ten years. I commute from Horsham station to the BBC every day, where I currently lead technical innovation on the news website.

I am a scientist by training, having previously completed a PhD in Cancer Research at the Royal Marsden.

If elected, I would seek to remove disabled parking charges from Horsham Hospital at the earliest opportunity.

Carol Hayton (Horsham Park)
I live in Clarence road in the centre of Horsham Park. I have a background in finance but now work as a community development project manager for a leading housing association.

I am tired of reading expensively produced glossy magazines outlining the council’s strategy for social housing and sustainable development within our district, which it then at every turn ignores.

If elected I will support only new housing developments that address the massive shortfall in affordable housing for local people.

David Hide (Horsham Park)
I am married to Carol and work on a wholesale plant nursery just outside Arundel as a production manager.

I have always been interested in our natural environment and will if elected bring both my passion and expertise in this area to the Council Chamber.

As Chair of Horsham Labour Party I have led our campaigns for increased levels of affordable housing, and opposed the cuts to day centres and our vital youth clubs. I am an active member of Unite the union and was proud to take part in the recent march to defend our public services. We will deliver high quality council services not currently being offered by Horsham Park's stay-away councillors.

Jill Allen (Pulborough and Coldwaltham)

Nick Field (Roffey North)

Ray Battersby (Roffey South)
Ray Battersby has lived in Horsham since 1971. He led the campaign for the re-instatement of full barrier gates at Littlehaven Station after the Tory Local and county councillors had given their approval for half-barrier gates.

An ex-secretary of Roffey Sports and Social Club - as well as being captain of Mannings Heath Golf Club, he has a solid record of local achievement and commitment.
He has been a local neighbourhood Councillor in the past and now thinks it is time for the electorate to vote, for the first time, past their front door - for Labour councillors to rid Horsham of its endemic inefficient strategy-less Tory and Liberal councillors who now are the local puppets of the Con-Dem Government.

Antony Bignell (Steyning)
Antony lives in Pulborough and works as a lecturer at Chichester University, training the teachers of tomorrow. He is an experienced Labour party candidate and in 2005 was the parliamentary candidate for Worthing West.

Antony lives within view of the South Downs and wholeheartedly welcomes the Labour government decision to confer National Park status on this beautiful landscape.

Alexandra Davis (Trafalgar)

Jacqueline Little (Trafalgar)
My family moved to the Horsham district in the 1950s, when Horsham was a small market town. I returned to the area in 1977 after a few years living in the North of England, Scotland and France. On leaving school I trained as a State Registered Nurse, which was followed by a number of years bringing up a family. During these years I became involved in playgroups, Parent Teacher Associations, and studied for a degree in the Humanities with the Open University. In 1984 I joined West Sussex County Council as an Assistant Social Worker involved in supporting elderly and disabled people. On qualifying as a social worker in 1987 I moved to Children and Family work and joined Surrey County Council in 1990. My career has been mainly working with children in the Care system, including time as a Team manager and as a Reviewing Officer.

Following retirement I have been able to develop other interests, including becoming a volunteer, joining the Horsham U3A and the Horsham Parkinson’s Society. I enjoy reading, the theatre and cinema, listening to music, spending time with my grandchildren and trying to keep fit! There is never enough time for everything.

I believe Horsham has a lot to offer its residents but there is always room for improvement. I am committed to high quality public services and to environmental issues. I believe Horsham has to seek a balance between providing good quality housing for local people and preserving the countryside and the quality of the local environment. I have been a member of the Labour party for a number of years and believe that Labour is the best party to meet local needs.
