Street Sweeping and Litter Watch

Carol Hayton, Labour's County Council candidate for Horsham Hurst and resident of Clarence Road, Horsham, is appalled by the lack of street sweeping within the town and since moving to Horsham two years ago has witnessed a steady decline in standards, despite regular complaints to the local council.

I believe that having my Lib Dem councillor, who used to live in the neighbouring street of Cambridge Road, but has now moved to Hastings, yes Hastings, East Sussex, probably isn't helping in my fight to keep the local streets clean.

I used to live in Guildford and streets were cleaned fortnightly, here the Tory Council say that as we are a rural district council, (I can't quite understand this definition as I walk into town along the Brighton Road) we only need to sweep the streets three times a year.

My walk to the station each morning is literally littered with papers, tins, cans and bottles. Storm drains are blocked and weeds grow in the unswept gutters and this despite the fact that the most recent scheduled clean took place just a few weeks back.

I have made an official complaint to the Council via their website http://www.horsham.gov.uk/council_services/council_services_1004.asp and have sent the following pictures as evidence.

Bottles and tins in the gutters...

Weeds everywhere...

Blocked drains...

Litter piling up...

I would be pleased to hear from you if you have similar experiences across the district, after all we are all paying for this service and yet I am sure very few of us are receiving value for money as nothing seems to happen around where I live.
